Philanthropist Martha Hart Transforms Grief into Community Impact

Philanthropist and researcher Martha Hart has dedicated her life to helping others through her work with the Owen Hart Foundation (OHF), which she founded in 2000 following the tragic death of her husband, Owen Hart. Known as a professional wrestler, Owen was remembered by his community as a caring husband, father, and friend. Martha Hart has turned her personal loss into a powerful force for good, focusing on initiatives that foster kindness and support for those in need.
In the years since its inception, the OHF has launched several programs aimed at addressing the challenges faced by vulnerable populations. One of its key initiatives is a scholarship program designed to assist high school students who may struggle to afford post-secondary education. Hart recalls her own educational journey, noting, “I had really worked hard to get to university, but I had some financial challenges and had to stop and start several times before I finally got through all my education.”
This scholarship program aims to lower the barriers that often prevent deserving students from accessing financial aid. According to Hart, many students working part-time miss out on scholarships that reward only top grades. “We wanted to lower the bar and make our scholarships and bursaries more accessible for students that really struggled with trying to get those top grades,” she explained.
Empowering Families Through Home Ownership
In addition to education, the OHF also addresses housing issues through its home ownership program. Inspired by her upbringing in a lower-income community, Hart understands the barriers families face when attempting to purchase a home. “Families could pay the bills, they could pay for everything, but they rented,” she said. “I could see that if they could just get over that hump to have a down payment for a home, that they could sustain themselves.”
The home ownership initiative focuses on teaching money management skills, which help families save for a down payment. The foundation encourages savings by matching contributions, donating $2 for every $1 saved over a year. “We’ve been able, now, all these years later, to help so many families to be able to purchase homes,” Hart remarked. “I’m really thrilled with that.”
Drawing from her life experiences, Hart has created a legacy of compassion that not only honors her husband’s memory but also transforms the lives of countless individuals in the community. Her commitment to kindness and community support illustrates the profound impact one person can have when they turn personal grief into action.
The Owen Hart Foundation continues to grow, and with it, the hope and support it provides to those in need. As Hart reflects on her journey, she emphasizes the importance of the work, stating, “I didn’t realize at the time that it would turn into kind of a life’s work for me. But it’s such meaningful work… it just inspires you to want to keep doing it.” Through her tireless efforts, Martha Hart has not only created a lasting tribute to her husband but has also established a beacon of hope for many.
