Janie Zmaeff, known for her warmth and infectious spirit, passed away peacefully at home at the age of 66, surrounded by her partner of 25 years, Jacob Fehr. Born in Qormi, Malta, she immigrated to Powell River, BC with her adventurous family, including two older siblings. Janie’s life was a tapestry of love, friendship, and a deep connection to nature.

Throughout her childhood, Janie and her family spent considerable time camping and traveling, fostering her lifelong love for the outdoors. This passion continued into her adult life, where she created lasting memories with friends during frequent weekend getaways. Many of these friendships began in her younger years and blossomed into cherished relationships that endured through the decades.

Janie was also renowned for her culinary skills, delighting friends and family with her delicious creations both professionally and as a hobby. Her home was a haven filled with joy, music, and laughter, often echoing with the sounds of live concerts that she loved to attend alongside her loved ones. Her sense of humor and kindness made her presence a source of comfort and joy to those fortunate enough to know her.

In addition to her partner, Janie leaves behind her daughter, Carmen (Jason), and son, Christopher. She is survived by her siblings Paul (Pat), Doris (Dave), and Mario (Roxanne), along with numerous nieces and nephews, including Shanalisa (Cam), Tairalyn (Sammy), Andrea (Justin), Dustin (Jennyfer), Mike (Carla), and AJ. She also leaves behind a loving extended family, including many great-nieces and great-nephews.

Janie was predeceased by her parents, Anthony Cassar and Carmen Cassar. Her family expresses heartfelt gratitude for the exceptional care provided by Campbell River Home Care Nursing and Home Support, as well as Dr. Miller, Dr. Morrison in Campbell River, and Dr. Dosani and Dr. Wong in Victoria.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Campbell River Red Cross. A service to celebrate Janie’s life will take place at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church on November 28, 2023, at 13:00, with refreshments to follow in the church hall.

As noted in the words of the late composer Irving Berlin, “The song is ended, but the melody lingers on.” Janie’s melody will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who loved her.
