Rivercity Players Shine at Vancouver Island One Act Play Festival
Members of the Rivercity Players, based in Campbell River, returned home this week with accolades after their performance of Laundry and Bourbon at the Vancouver Island One Act Play Festival. The event took place from November 5 to 9 in Qualicum Beach, where the play received high praise from adjudicators and festival attendees alike.
Written by James McLure and directed by Dennis Hawkins-Bogle, Laundry and Bourbon had previously been selected as the audience favorite during Rivercity’s own One Act Play Series earlier this fall. The show’s success at the local level paved the way for its representation at the Island festival, showcasing the talent of the Campbell River community.
During the festival, adjudicators Eliza Gardiner and Ward Norcutt commended the cast and crew for their exceptional performance. They particularly highlighted the contributions of first-time actors Amy LaRocque-Walker and Melissa Lanyon, whose performances added depth to the production.
At the awards ceremony, Kelly Senko, who portrayed Hattie, earned the title of best actor in a female supporting role. Additionally, Dennis Hawkins-Bogle received the prestigious award for best director, recognizing his skillful leadership in bringing the production to life.
The entire production was a collaborative effort. Glen Clark was responsible for light and sound design, as well as stage management. Meanwhile, Heather Gordon Murphy designed the costumes, contributing to the overall aesthetic and authenticity of the performance.
The recognition at the Vancouver Island festival not only honors the individual talents involved but also reflects the vibrant cultural scene within Campbell River. The Rivercity Players’ commitment to showcasing quality theatre ensures that local stories and talents continue to resonate with audiences beyond their community.
