Sam Smith Honors Beverly Glenn-Copeland at PTP Pink Awards
At the PTP Pink Awards held in Toronto on November 7, 2025, British singer Sam Smith recognized Canadian artist Beverly Glenn-Copeland with the legacy award, highlighting their shared connection forged during their first meeting. Smith traveled specifically to the Fairmont Royal York Hotel to celebrate Glenn-Copeland, whom he referred to as “a true statesman of the queer community.”
In his heartfelt address, Smith expressed how he was captivated by Glenn-Copeland’s voice, describing it as “like feeling a warm embrace.” He emphasized the significance of Glenn-Copeland’s artistry during a time when many seek comfort and clarity. “Listening to him sing is like feeling a warm embrace … a calming voice for our times,” Smith noted in front of an engaged audience.
Highlighting the Importance of LGBTQ+ Advocacy
The second edition of the Pink Awards honored six influential figures within the LGBTQ+ community, emphasizing the importance of recognizing those who have made a significant impact. This year’s event particularly focused on uplifting transgender voices, a response to ongoing challenges faced by transgender individuals in both Canada and the United States.
During his opening remarks, David Walberg, the executive director and CEO of Pink Triangle Press, pointed out that the landscape for transgender rights has shifted dramatically. He referenced the re-election of Donald Trump just days before the inaugural Pink Awards, stating, “Since then, trans people have seen efforts to roll back their rights.” Walberg highlighted alarming developments, including book bans in Alberta and discussions about reducing healthcare access for transgender individuals.
Despite the challenging circumstances, the Pink Awards celebrated those advocating for change rather than dwelling on fear. The event featured multiple performances, including a poignant cover by Toronto singer-songwriter T. Thompson, who highlighted the lyric, “Nothing worth having comes without a fight,” inviting the audience to join in.
A Focus on Impactful Organizations
Five distinguished LGBTQ+ individuals were recognized during the awards ceremony. Each honoree selected a community group to receive a donation of at least $5,000, supported by proceeds from a silent auction. This initiative drew praise from attendees, including U.S. transgender writer Harper Steele, who remarked, “What a cool idea. Why aren’t all awards shows like this?”
Steele chose to support Friends of Ruby, a Toronto-based organization providing youth counseling and social services. Other honorees included Devery Jacobs, known for her role in “Reservation Dogs,” who selected the Native Youth Sexual Health Network, and musician Carole Pope, who chose to donate to the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research in memory of her late brother, a pivotal figure in the ACTUP movement.
Lawyer Douglas Elliott, who has made significant contributions to LGBTQ+ rights in Canada, expressed pride in being included among entertainers. Elliott, known for his role in landmark cases, including the LGBT Purge, chose to donate his award money to the Wabanaki Two-Spirit Alliance, emphasizing the need to support Indigenous LGBTQ+ individuals.
The Pink Awards, organized by Pink Triangle Press, a media outlet dedicated to LGBTQ+ representation, showcased the importance of advocacy within the community. Co-hosted by Emily Hampshire from “Schitt’s Creek” and choreographer Hollywood Jade from “Canada’s Drag Race,” the event was a vibrant celebration of resilience and hope.
As the evening concluded, it became evident that the Pink Awards are not just about recognition, but also about fostering a sense of community and support for organizations making a difference in the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals across Canada.
