The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) hosted its annual First Nations Veterans Summit on November 5, 2023, at the Hilton Winnipeg Airport Suites. The event aimed to honour and recognize the bravery and sacrifices of Indigenous veterans while providing a platform for reflection on the past initiatives of the First Nations veteran program.

During the summit, SCO Program Manager Justin Woodcock highlighted the challenges faced by many veterans seeking assistance. “A lot of the veterans that come to our office looking for support are seeking assistance with their Veterans Affairs claims,” he stated. He emphasized the need for ongoing support, noting that the organization offers various cultural events, including drum-making workshops and sweat lodge ceremonies, to help veterans heal from service-related trauma.

Woodcock also addressed the issue of homelessness among veterans, referencing data from End Homelessness Winnipeg. He pointed out that veterans represent nearly six percent of all unhoused individuals surveyed. “We need to make sure that those folks know that there are supports for them and that our program is here to lift them up,” he said. The SCO conducts monthly encampment walks to connect with unhoused veterans and inform them about available services.

Recognition and Legislative Milestone

A significant highlight of the summit was the recent passage of Bill 210, which permanently designates November 8 as Indigenous Veterans Day in Manitoba. Woodcock expressed pride in the legislative achievement, stating, “We were consulted on the language of the bill—myself and Grand Chief Jerry Daniels of SCO—and we’re really happy that it has come to fruition.”

The recognition of Indigenous Veterans Day aims to raise awareness of the contributions and sacrifices made by Indigenous people in military service. The day will provide an opportunity for reflection, education, and community engagement across Manitoba.

As the summit concluded, participants left with a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to supporting Indigenous veterans. The SCO continues to advocate for the needs and rights of these individuals, ensuring that their sacrifices are acknowledged and that they receive the assistance they deserve.

Through initiatives like the First Nations Veterans Summit, the SCO reaffirms its dedication to honouring the legacy of Indigenous service members while fostering a supportive community for those in need.
