Siblings Launch Cookies for a Cause Fundraiser for Cancer Research
In a heartfelt initiative, siblings Mya and Josh Kooner from South Vancouver have teamed up with award-winning baker Raveena Oberoi of Just Cakes Bakeshop to launch “Cookies for a Cause.” This fundraiser aims to support the BC Cancer Foundation in light of their mother’s recent breast cancer diagnosis. The siblings hope their efforts will assist others facing similar challenges while raising awareness for cancer research.
The diagnosis was a significant shock for the Kooner family. “It was something we couldn’t control,” said Mya Kooner, who is 16. “We wanted to do something meaningful to help others going through this and make a difference.” With this motivation, Mya and her 14-year-old brother, Josh, reached out to Oberoi, who quickly embraced their vision of selling cookies to generate funds.
The “Cookies for a Cause” campaign invites community members to donate $25 or more, which will secure a six-pack of signature cookies. Donations can be made online at donate.bccancerfoundation.com/goto/Just_Cakes-Kooner_teens, where the ambitious goal is to raise $5,500. Cookies will be available for pick-up after the fundraiser, with locations in Surrey and South Vancouver.
Community Involvement and Upcoming Events
Just Cakes Bakeshop, located in Newton at the intersection of Scott Road and 75A Avenue, also has a warehouse in Cloverdale at 17957 55 Ave. Their partnership with the Kooner siblings not only highlights local entrepreneurship but also underscores the importance of community involvement during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which takes place every October.
Reflecting on their collaboration, Josh expressed gratitude towards Oberoi, stating, “Mya and I are so grateful to Raveena for stepping up. It was fun brainstorming which cookie flavors people would love most.” This creative spirit is evident in the variety of cookies being offered, catering to diverse tastes while supporting a crucial cause.
In addition to the cookie fundraiser, Just Cakes Bakeshop will host a “Cakesgiving” event on October 19. This gathering, co-hosted by Oberoi and Neely Rajput from The Whisk Full Baker, will feature a “cake meetup and swap event.” Tickets for the event are available for $20 on Eventbrite, inviting cake enthusiasts to come together and celebrate their passion for baking.
For further information regarding the fundraiser or to participate, interested individuals can contact Harvey Kooner, the father of Mya and Josh, at 604-671-4180. This initiative not only aims to raise funds for breast cancer research but also fosters a sense of community support during a challenging time for the Kooner family.
