The fourth annual South Island Powwow will take place on September 30 at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria, marking the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Hosted by the Songhees Nation with support from the City of Victoria, this event aims to honour survivors of residential schools, the Sixties Scoop, and the children who never returned home.

The Powwow will begin its festivities with a significant ceremony dedicated to acknowledging survivors and remembering those lost. Attendees can expect a vibrant program that includes a grand entry of Nations, traditional drumming, singing, dancing, and cultural performances. More than 90 vendors will be present, featuring 72 Indigenous merchants alongside local food trucks.

Chief Ron Sam of the Songhees Nation emphasized the importance of the event, stating, “The South Island Powwow is more than a celebration – it’s a declaration that our culture is alive and thriving. Each drumbeat is a heartbeat of our people. We welcome everyone to join us in this sacred space of honour, healing and cultural pride.”

Victoria’s Mayor Marianne Alto expressed the city’s commitment to supporting the Powwow, saying, “We are honoured to support the Songhees Nation in hosting the event. We encourage our residents to take this opportunity to learn and listen.”

Gates will open at 10 a.m., with the grand entry scheduled for noon and the event concluding at 8 p.m. The South Island Powwow is free and open to the public, welcoming families, schools, and visitors of all ages.
