A region near Edmonton, Alberta, has gained recognition as one of the most livable places in Canada. In its latest report, The Globe and Mail ranked Strathcona County as the second most livable municipality in the province, placing it 39th overall in Canada. This ranking was part of the newspaper’s third edition of Canada’s 100 Most Livable Cities, which assessed a total of 454 cities using 58 variables across ten categories, including economy, housing, health care, and safety.

The rankings aim to assist Canadians in identifying communities where they can thrive based on their personal circumstances. According to The Globe and Mail, new climate variables were introduced this year to measure the impact of extreme temperatures on energy costs and infrastructure. This addition reflects a growing awareness of how climate can influence livability.

Strathcona County and Its Neighbors

Strathcona County is classified as a specialized municipality, encompassing both urban and rural areas. The urban centre of Sherwood Park, which has a population exceeding 75,000, is the county’s largest community. Surrounding it are several hamlets, including Antler Lake, Ardrossan, and Collingwood Cove.

In this year’s rankings, Strathcona County was outpaced only by Okotoks, which secured the 29th position nationally. Other nearby communities also featured in the rankings. St. Albert, for instance, ranked 45th, experiencing a significant drop of 22 spots compared to the previous year. In contrast, Fort Saskatchewan made a remarkable leap, rising by 172 positions to claim the 86th spot. Spruce Grove also improved its standing, climbing 45 spots to sit at 94th, just ahead of Edmonton, which ranked 90th.

A Closer Look at the Rankings

The rankings provide valuable insights into the livability of various regions in Canada. The analysis not only focuses on economic factors but also considers the community, amenities, and climate, which are increasingly relevant in today’s world.

Three of the top-ranked cities are located within the Greater Vancouver Area, highlighting the region’s overall appeal. These findings are essential for families and individuals looking to relocate, as they underscore the importance of comprehensive assessments in choosing a community.

For those residing in Strathcona County, the question remains: what makes this area so desirable? As the community continues to thrive, residents are encouraged to share their experiences and insights about life in this vibrant municipality.
