Teams Showcase Strength in North Bay’s Annual Plane Pull Event
On March 7, 2024, teams gathered at Jack Garland Airport in North Bay for the annual United Way of North East Ontario plane pull, a unique event aimed at raising funds for community programs. Nine teams, each consisting of ten participants, took part in the challenge of pulling a hefty 30,000-pound twin-jet engine aircraft across the tarmac.
Participants showcased their strength while competing for the best time and, ultimately, bragging rights. Among the teams was Team Enbridge, which successfully pulled the plane with considerable teamwork. “It’s all about pulling together as a team,” stated Anna Iati, a member of Team Enbridge. The team also made a significant contribution to the event, donating $5,000 to support the cause. “Giving back to where we live, work and play—that’s what it’s all about,” Iati added.
This year’s event marked a record for participation, with a total of 32 teams registered, as noted by Sandi Scott, spokesperson for Team Voyageur Aviation. “We have nine teams this year; it’s the most teams we’ve ever submitted,” she remarked, highlighting the growing interest in the annual fundraiser.
Tana Corbeil, representing the District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board on Team ‘Un-pull-evable,’ expressed her excitement for participating in the event for the first time. “I tell everybody to put it out into the universe that we’re going to rock it,” she said, showcasing the enthusiastic spirit of the participants.
As the competition commenced, United Way of North East Ontario had already collected over $15,000 in donations. Over the past eight years, the plane pull has raised more than $50,000 for community initiatives. Tamika Daniels, the regional manager of Nipissing-Parry Sound for United Way, emphasized the importance of the funds raised. “We address gaps but also support programs that make a huge impact,” she stated.
The funds generated from the event support various programs, including Keeping Seniors Warm and Ready for School. “We fund the Elmwood Hub, United for Literacy, and the PADDLE Program,” Daniels explained. “There are a ton of other programs that we currently fund—11 to be exact.”
Participants of the plane pull expressed their enjoyment of the event, finding a sense of camaraderie and purpose in their efforts. By combining strength with community spirit, the teams not only showcased their abilities but also contributed significantly to the betterment of their community through the United Way of North East Ontario.
