Three Pioneering Women in Health Care Receive Prestigious Medal

The McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) Foundation, in collaboration with Jennifer Maccarone, MNA for Westmount–Saint-Louis, honored three distinguished women in health care on November 20, 2025. During a ceremony held at Westmount’s historic Victoria Hall, Dr. Liane Feldman, Dr. Nadia Giannetti, and Dr. Lucy Gilbert received the Medal of the Member of the National Assembly. This accolade recognizes their significant contributions and leadership in health care, research, and education.

The event was attended by a diverse group of supporters, including family, friends, colleagues, and leadership from the MUHC and its Foundation. In her speech, Maccarone emphasized the importance of recognizing leaders in the community, stating, “Honoring these three exceptional women is a true privilege. They are not only leaders—they are role models for all of us. By celebrating their achievements, we send a powerful message: excellence knows no gender.”

Dr. Liane Feldman made history as the first woman to serve as the Surgeon-in-Chief at the MUHC and as Chair of the Department of Surgery at McGill University. She is known for her pioneering work in minimally invasive surgical techniques and for developing multidisciplinary care pathways that enhance patient recovery. In her acceptance remarks, Feldman expressed her gratitude, saying, “This recognition belongs to all of them. The support of the MUHC Foundation and its donors empowers us to innovate and modernize our tools.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Nadia Giannetti, the first woman to lead the MUHC’s Department of Cardiology, has played a vital role in advancing cardiac care. Currently serving as Associate Physician-in-Chief and Director of the Courtois Cardiovascular Signature Program, she focuses on personalizing cardiac health. Giannetti reflected on her career, stating, “Being a doctor is something I have wanted my entire life. I am profoundly grateful to everyone who made this special honour possible.”

Adding to the list of achievements, Dr. Lucy Gilbert is recognized as a leading gynecologic oncologist and an internationally acclaimed cancer researcher. She chairs the Gerald Bronfman Department of Oncology at McGill University and is the visionary behind DOvEEgene, a revolutionary screening test for ovarian and endometrial cancers. Gilbert acknowledged the significance of support from the MUHC Foundation, saying, “Your generosity allows us to push the boundaries of medicine and give patients the hope and care they deserve.”

The recognition of these three women is a source of pride for the MUHC, which is celebrated for its dedication to excellence in patient care and innovative research. Dr. Lucie Opatrny, President and Executive Director of MUHC, stated, “These women are true trailblazers in their fields, and we are so proud to have them represent the MUHC.”

The MUHC Foundation was instrumental in nominating these leaders, reflecting its commitment to advancing women’s health through its Forward Fund: For Women’s Health campaign, which was launched in May 2025. Marie-Hélène Laramee, President and CEO of the MUHC Foundation, highlighted the foundation’s mission, stating, “Supporting innovation and excellence in health care is the reason the MUHC Foundation exists.”

The accomplishments and dedication of Dr. Feldman, Dr. Giannetti, and Dr. Gilbert not only elevate the standards of care at the MUHC but also inspire future generations of medical professionals. Their work serves as a testament to the impact that leadership and innovation can have on health care systems globally.
