TransLink Unveils LEGO Sets to Celebrate SkyTrain’s 40th Anniversary
Public transit enthusiasts can now commemorate a significant milestone in Metro Vancouver’s transportation history with the launch of limited-edition LEGO sets. TransLink, the region’s public transit authority, has partnered with local company Heritage Bricks to create a collectible series of building kits featuring all four iconic SkyTrain car models. This initiative celebrates the impending 40th anniversary of the SkyTrain network, which officially began operations on December 11, 1985.
The newly introduced SkyTrain Generations Building Kit series includes models of the Mark I, Mark II, Mark III, and the latest Mark V trains. Each kit is designed to replicate the details of the original train cars, complete with track and a station platform section that features overhead signage. Additionally, each model showcases a detailed train interior, while the platform functions as a stand and includes a label identifying the train model and its manufacturing year.
As the original Mark I trains, which debuted in the 1980s and early 1990s, prepare for retirement over the next two years, the launch of these LEGO sets provides a unique opportunity for fans to connect with this important part of transit history. The Mark II trains, primarily operating on the Millennium Line, were introduced in the 2000s, while the Mark III trains were brought into service between 2016 and 2020.
Limited Availability and Pre-Order Details
TransLink has announced that only 700 LEGO kits will be produced, with 175 of each model available for purchase. Each kit retails for $75, meaning that collectors looking to acquire the complete set of four will need to invest $300. The kits can currently be pre-ordered exclusively through the Heritage Bricks website, and customers are encouraged to opt for local pickup at checkout to ensure timely delivery ahead of the holiday season.
According to TransLink, this collaboration not only aims to support local creators but also represents a creative approach to generating non-fare revenue. The funds raised through the sale of these LEGO kits will contribute to ongoing improvements within the transit system, while simultaneously engaging riders in a unique, nostalgic manner.
Connecting with Transit History
The SkyTrain Generations Building Kits are expected to attract a wide audience, including LEGO enthusiasts, transit fans, and holiday shoppers. Each kit serves as a tangible connection to Metro Vancouver’s transit legacy, allowing collectors to display their models or enjoy the building process.
In addition to these new LEGO sets, TransLink’s online merchandise store offers traditional toy models of SkyTrain and West Coast Express trains, as well as the SeaBus ferry vessel. Earlier this year, the transit authority launched its first-ever collectible trading cards, featuring SkyTrain, West Coast Express, bus, and SeaBus designs.
Heritage Bricks also markets other buildable kits, including models of the Vancouver Special single-family house and Aquabus Ferries vessels. The diverse offerings from both TransLink and Heritage Bricks reflect a growing interest in celebrating and preserving the history of public transit in Metro Vancouver.
With the SkyTrain network poised to celebrate its 40th anniversary on December 11, 2025, these LEGO kits represent more than just toys; they are a tribute to four decades of service and innovation in public transit.
