Metro Vancouver’s transit authority, TransLink, has launched its newest SkyTrain model, the Mark V, with an engaging twist. To celebrate this significant addition to the Expo Line, the organization released a parody of “What Is This Feeling?” from the musical Wicked. The video, shared on TransLink’s social media platforms on July 17, 2025, features local performers singing reimagined lyrics that emphasize the train’s modern features, including wider aisles and upgraded HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems.

The parody draws inspiration from a duet performed by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the Wicked film. In a playful nod to the original, TransLink recreated the viral dance moment featuring Grande, who portrays Glinda, as she dances in Shiz University’s courtyard. Instead of spellcasting, the video showcases the sleek design of the new SkyTrain, complete with interiors and a five-car open gangway set to an upbeat show tune.

Capacity and Features of the New Mark V Train

The unveiling of the first of 47 Mark V trains occurred earlier this week, attended by dignitaries, media, and enthusiastic public transit supporters. These five-car trains are designed to accommodate up to 672 passengers, significantly increasing capacity compared to the existing four-car Mark III trains, which hold 533 passengers.

Beyond the increased capacity, the Mark V trains come equipped with several upgrades, including enhanced accessibility features and improved passenger comfort. With ongoing projects like the Broadway Subway extension and the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain project, the Mark V is poised to meet the rising demand for public transit in the region. TransLink anticipates a 20 percent increase in Expo Line ridership and a 50 percent increase on the Millennium Line during peak hours over the next five years.

TransLink’s Innovative Marketing Approach

TransLink has recently embraced a creative approach to marketing, incorporating playful and festive ideas into its campaigns. Previous initiatives have included a holiday-themed Reindeer Bus and engaging content on platforms such as TikTok. The decision to create a Broadway-style parody reflects this trend and aims to connect with the community in a fun and relatable manner.

As the public reacts to TransLink’s latest venture, the organization invites feedback on the parody video. Whether users find it “Wicked-ly good” or not, the effort to celebrate the new SkyTrain model with creativity has certainly made an impression.

With the Mark V now in operation, TransLink is not just enhancing its fleet but also reinforcing its commitment to providing an enjoyable transit experience for all users.
