TransLink’s Etiquette Video Sparks Debate on Transit Behavior

A recent 18-second video released by TransLink, the public transportation system in Metro Vancouver, has ignited discussions about transit etiquette. The video features a passenger offering his seat to a young woman, accompanied by a series of reminders about courteous behavior on public transport. It quickly gained traction across social media platforms, with viewers engaging in animated discussions about their own experiences on transit.
The clip highlights several basic etiquette reminders, including the importance of removing backpacks in crowded spaces, using headphones instead of speakers, and keeping bags out of the aisles to ensure a clear passage. The video is set to an audio clip featuring a well-known line from reality television personality Kris Jenner, which has become a popular meme on platforms like TikTok. TransLink posted the video with the caption, “You LOVE to see it!” indicating their aim to promote positive behavior among commuters.
According to Thor Diakow, Senior Media Relations Advisor at TransLink, the video was not spontaneous. It was staged, filmed, and edited in-house in September 2022 and was reposted this year as part of a back-to-school campaign linked to their Fall Service Changes. The clip has attracted thousands of views across platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram.
While many viewers applauded the video for showcasing simple acts of courtesy, others took to the comments section to voice their frustrations regarding common transit issues. Complaints included riders blocking doors, failing to relinquish priority seating for seniors, and the general lack of consideration displayed by some passengers. One commenter lamented, “Too bad this doesn’t happen more often. Nobody waits to let others off before they enter.”
TransLink emphasized that videos like this serve as vital reminders about basic transit etiquette. For instance, they encourage passengers to place bags on their laps or the floor to prevent obstructions in aisles. Diakow also mentioned plans for future campaigns, stating, “We will be launching a new safety campaign this fall and a new etiquette campaign in the future, so stay tuned!”
Reviving Conversations on Transit Etiquette
The topic of transit etiquette consistently resonates with Metro Vancouver riders. Previous discussions have highlighted essential courtesies such as maintaining personal hygiene and moderating conversation volumes. These small yet significant behaviors can transform an otherwise crowded bus or train into a more pleasant experience for all passengers.
The viral impact of TransLink’s video serves as a reminder that even the simplest gestures, like offering a seat, can have a positive effect on someone’s day. As Metro Vancouver engages in renewed conversations about shared space on the SkyTrain and buses, it may encourage riders to reflect on their own habits and interactions while commuting.
TransLink’s initiative to promote better transit etiquette through engaging content highlights the agency’s commitment to enhancing the public transportation experience. As discussions continue, both online and offline, the hope is that more passengers will embrace courtesy, fostering a more respectful environment on public transport.
