Two British Columbia Cities Rank Among Canada’s Best Places to Live

Two cities in British Columbia have been recognized among the best places to live in Canada, according to a recent report by Global Citizen Solutions. The ranking features a total of 15 municipalities, with Vancouver and Victoria making the list, although neither city secured a spot in the top five.
Calgary claimed the top position as the best place to live in Canada, boasting an average salary of $58,243 and an average home price of $653,903. This ranking highlights several factors, including local industries, average income, and housing costs.
Victoria Stands Out in Rankings
Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia, ranked sixth. The report indicates that the average salary in Victoria is approximately $54,007, while the average home price is considerably higher at $961,000. Major sectors contributing to employment in Victoria include technology, tourism, transportation, hospitality, and healthcare.
The report emphasizes the city’s appeal to young Canadians, noting that “Victoria’s career opportunities in tech, health, and tourism, along with affordability and a unique blend of city life and natural beauty, make it one of the best places to live for young adults.” The city’s rich natural environment further enhances its attractiveness.
Vancouver’s High Cost of Living
Vancouver, which ranked eighth, reported a higher average salary of $69,512, but this comes alongside a steep average home price of $1,239,418. The report identifies Vancouver’s main industries as technology and innovation, tourism, natural resources, entertainment, and construction.
Despite its vibrant economy, Vancouver’s high cost of living and unaffordable housing are likely factors that prevented it from ranking higher. The report states, “Vancouver is the largest city in British Columbia, but it is also very expensive.”
Vancouver’s efficient transit system also received commendation. The city is noted for its excellent transportation options, including buses, SkyTrain, and SeaBus, which contribute to a more accessible urban lifestyle.
Other Canadian cities featured in the top 15 rankings include Quebec City, Fredericton, Charlottetown, Saskatoon, Toronto, Waterloo, Winnipeg, Halifax, Hamilton, Montreal, Edmonton, and Ottawa.
As residents of Vancouver and Victoria reflect on their cities being recognized as some of the best places to live in Canada, the report prompts a discussion on the balance between quality of life and the challenges of affordability in urban settings.
