Two Vernon Teens Compete for Youth Athlete of the Year Title
Two teenagers from the North Okanagan region are vying for the prestigious title of Youth Athlete of the Year. Jillian Donald, a blackbelt from Sundance Taekwon-do in Vernon, and Caden O’Dwyer, a football player at Clarence Fulton Secondary School, have both advanced to the next stage of the online contest. As of now, Donald ranks second in her group while O’Dwyer holds the top position in his. The athletes with the most votes will progress to subsequent rounds, and the contest winner will receive a substantial $25,000 prize along with a feature in a 3BRAND advertisement in Sports Illustrated.
O’Dwyer shared his passion for sports in his profile, stating, “I enjoy the hustle, improvement, understanding, and intensity. I absolutely love the loud crowds, touchdowns, brotherhood, and teamwork.” He expressed deep gratitude towards his father, who he considers his biggest inspiration both on and off the field. “He pushed me beyond myself to be who he always knew I could be. I am a greater person for it. He raised my expectations and believed in me. He taught me not to quit and how to handle defeat,” O’Dwyer remarked. He noted that their shared workouts have been a significant part of his development as an athlete.
Jillian Donald’s Inspiring Journey
Donald’s journey has been particularly remarkable. Diagnosed with type one diabetes at the age of six, she is now set to represent Team Canada at the International Taekwon-do Federation World Championships in Croatia from October 7 to 11, 2023. Her proudest moment so far came when she earned her first-degree blackbelt in March. Following this achievement, she traveled across the country to compete in the national championships, where she secured the title of national champion and qualified for the national team selections. “I made Team Canada just two months after my blackbelt test, while living with type one diabetes,” Donald said.
Both athletes are now counting on community support as they encourage votes for their respective profiles. The contest not only aims to recognize their individual achievements but also highlights the importance of perseverance and dedication in sports.
