The Flanagan family’s Christmas tree business has made a significant impact on Toronto’s homeless community for over three decades. Since the early 1990s, the business, which started with one lot in the Annex neighborhood, has raised more than $820,000 for the charity Out of the Cold, which provides meals, shelter, and support to those in need during the winter months.

Sonny Flanagan initiated this charitable effort by designating a portion of every tree sale to Out of the Cold. His daughters, Bobbi Johnston-Flanagan and Corey Flanagan, now manage the family business and continue this tradition of giving back. Bobbi recently shared with CBC Toronto, “It’s really gratifying giving back to the community this way. It’s always been part of our lives; it makes you feel good.”

The program director of Out of the Cold, Sharna Cohen, emphasized the importance of the Flanagan family’s contributions, stating that their donations account for nearly one-third of the organization’s budget. So far this season, Sonny’s Christmas Trees has raised almost $78,000, showcasing the strong community support behind their initiative.

Expansion of the Family Business

What began as a single lot has grown into four seasonal tree lots across Toronto. The family now operates locations outside Stock T.C. in the Yonge-Eglinton area, at Eastminster United Church near Chester subway station, and in the No Frills parking lot on St. Clair Avenue W. near Oakwood Avenue.

Bobbi revealed that tree prices vary, with the smallest trees starting at around $30 and larger ones priced at approximately $80. Once the total proceeds are calculated, 20 percent goes directly to Out of the Cold. “Volunteering has always been part of our lives,” she noted, adding that the work is enjoyable. “You can’t be down when you’re coming to work with Christmas trees.”

Cohen expressed profound gratitude for the Flanagan family’s ongoing support, stating, “Thank you from the bottom of my heart!” Out of the Cold operates without government funding, relying solely on donations from individuals, institutions, and corporations. The organization provides essential services such as meals, snacks, shelter beds, and health and job search assistance at over a dozen locations.

The Role of Community in Supporting the Homeless

Cohen pointed out the increasing challenges faced by low-income individuals and the unhoused, particularly due to rising rents and inflation affecting food costs. “The need is huge,” she noted, highlighting that Out of the Cold aims to offer comfort and assistance to those struggling to survive.

During a recent visit to the Annex tree lot, customers like David and Asher Woodhead expressed their commitment to the Flanagan family business. David, who has been purchasing trees from Sonny’s since 1990, shared, “I don’t remember not getting our trees here. It’s been our spot because I know the money is going somewhere worthwhile, and I don’t have to shop at a big box store or a chain.”

As the Christmas season continues, the Flanagan family remains dedicated to their cause. Bobbi confirmed that the tree lots will be open until the end of the day on December 24, or until all remaining trees are sold. With their ongoing efforts, the Flanagan family not only nurtures holiday traditions but also uplifts their community through meaningful contributions to those in need.
