Victoria Crowned Most Generous Community in Canada for 2025
Victoria has earned the title of “Most Generous Community in Canada” for 2025, according to GoFundMe. This recognition marks the third consecutive year that the city has received this honor. The ranking is determined by the number of unique donors per capita on the fundraising platform, with Victoria reporting over 18,500 unique donors, which constitutes approximately 20.21 percent of the city’s population based on the 2021 Canadian census, estimating the population at around 92,000.
In a statement released on Tuesday, GoFundMe highlighted the community’s remarkable generosity during a year marked by economic challenges, significant climate disasters, and global unrest. “Victoria has stepped up in remarkable ways,” the organization noted.
Key Fundraising Efforts in Victoria
This year, two particular fundraising initiatives captured attention. One notable effort came from Adam Trimm, who launched a campaign while running the Royal Victoria Half Marathon. Trimm aimed to support his friend, Derek Breen, who was diagnosed with ALS. His campaign exceeded its ambitious goal, raising over $100,000 to assist Breen in his battle against the disease.
In addition, the Beacon Hill Children’s Farm, a beloved local landmark, successfully raised more than $180,000. These funds were critical in ensuring the farm’s continued operation, showcasing the community’s commitment to preserving important local resources.
British Columbia as a whole demonstrated significant generosity, with four of the top five cities in GoFundMe’s ranking hailing from the province. Following Victoria, North Vancouver took second place, with Vancouver, St. John’s in Newfoundland and Labrador, and New Westminster completing the top five. A Testament to Community Spirit
GoFundMe CEO Tim Cadogan commented on the findings, stating, “Every donation is powered by a deeply human story. We see it in a neighborhood rallying to save a beloved children’s bookstore or a community uniting to keep a local farm open and its animals cared for.” He added that Canadians consistently respond swiftly and emphatically to growing needs.
The recognition of Victoria as Canada’s most generous community underscores the power of collective action and support, particularly during challenging times. With continued commitment from its residents, Victoria exemplifies the spirit of giving that resonates across the country.
