Organizers in DeKalb, Illinois, are holding a public vigil on the evening of March 15, 2024, to honor **Renee Nicole Macklin Good**, a 37-year-old woman from Minnesota who was shot and killed by a federal immigration agent on March 13. The vigil will take place from 19:00 to 20:00 at the intersection of First Street and Lincoln Highway in downtown DeKalb. Attendees are encouraged to bring candles and signs that express a commitment to “peace and justice,” as stated in the event flyer.

Good, a poet and mother of three, had recently moved to Minneapolis. She was shot in front of a family member in a residential neighborhood just south of downtown Minneapolis, near some of the oldest immigrant markets and approximately one mile from where **George Floyd** was killed by police in 2020. According to multiple reports, Good was a U.S. citizen born in Colorado and had no significant criminal history beyond minor traffic violations.

The incident has drawn significant attention and controversy. Following the shooting, **Kristi Noem**, the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, labeled Good a “domestic terrorist,” claiming she attempted to ram her car into federal agents. This narrative was further echoed by former President **Donald Trump** and Vice President **J.D. Vance** the following day.

Local officials and bystanders have contested this portrayal. **Jacob Frey**, the Mayor of Minneapolis, described Noem’s account as “garbage” and criticized the deployment of over 2,000 federal officers to the Twin Cities as part of Trump’s immigration enforcement strategy. The event has sparked outrage among Illinois Democrats, who have called for a comprehensive investigation and transparency from both the Department of Homeland Security and the Trump administration.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that the shooting was captured on video from multiple angles, casting doubt on the official narrative provided by the federal government. Reports emerging late Thursday indicated that border patrol agents had shot and wounded two individuals in **Portland, Oregon**, further raising concerns about the actions of federal agents in urban areas during Trump’s immigration crackdown.

The vigil in DeKalb is set to be a space for reflection and solidarity, as community members come together to mourn the loss of Good and to advocate for justice.
