Youth Philanthropist Donates Nearly $4,000 for Mental Health Care
A young philanthropist, known as Bentley Davidson or “Pint Sized Gord,” has made a significant contribution to mental health care at the Belleville General Hospital (BGH) in Ontario, Canada. Last week, Bentley presented a donation of $3,985.49 to support the Sills 5 Mental Health Unit, a gesture that underscores his commitment to enhancing healthcare in his community.
The funds were raised through the community event Quinte Has Talent, which Bentley and his family organized. Over the past 11 years, his innovative fundraising efforts have generated more than $70,000 for local healthcare and community initiatives. This year, Bentley chose to focus on mental health after completing a school project on the subject and witnessing a family member’s own mental health journey.
Understanding the pressing need for accessible mental health support, Bentley wanted to ensure that individuals in his community have access to strong resources. BGH is designated as a Schedule 1 facility under Ontario’s Mental Health Act, providing a comprehensive range of mental health services. These include crisis care, inpatient treatment, outpatient services, and community support, all tailored to meet individual needs.
The Sills 5 unit is known for its recovery-oriented care, which is delivered by interprofessional teams. These teams focus on assessments, therapy, and recovery strategies that emphasize each patient’s strengths and goals. Among the various programs offered are the Crisis Intervention Centre, Transitional Outpatient Centre, and Assertive Community Treatment Team.
Krista VanEgmond, Manager of the Mental Health Unit, highlighted that BGH is also a proud partner of the national 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline, a free and accessible service available around the clock via call or text for anyone in crisis or concerned about a loved one.
Amanda Grydziuszko from the Belleville General Hospital Foundation expressed gratitude for Bentley’s generosity, stating, “His compassion, leadership, and long-standing commitment to giving back are truly inspiring. Bentley’s generosity will make a meaningful difference for individuals and families receiving mental health care at BGH.”
The Foundation extends heartfelt thanks to Bentley and his family for their ongoing dedication to supporting community health initiatives. Their contribution will play a vital role in enhancing mental health services and facilitating recovery for residents across the Quinte region. Through his actions, Bentley Davidson exemplifies the profound impact that one individual can have on the well-being of many.
