MINNEAPOLIS – A chilling account of survival emerged from Minnesota as state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, recounted the terrifying night they were targeted and shot by a masked gunman.

Immediate Impact

The Hoffmans were at their home in the early hours of Saturday, following a Democratic fundraising dinner, when they were jolted awake by a pounding on their front door. The assailant, posing as a police officer, demanded entry, leading to a confrontation that left the couple severely wounded.

Key Details Emerge

Sen. Hoffman, his wife, and their daughter, Hope, faced the gunman at their doorstep. “All three of us were in the entryway,” the couple recounted. John Hoffman was struck nine times as he attempted to disarm the intruder. Yvette Hoffman managed to push the gunman away and close the door, but not before being hit eight times.

17 gunshots were fired at the Hoffmans during the attack.

Their daughter, Hope, acted swiftly, locking the door and calling 911. The gunman, identified as 57-year-old Vance Boelter, fled the scene.

Tragic Aftermath

Boelter’s rampage continued as he drove to the home of Minnesota state lawmaker Melissa Hortman in Brooklyn Park, where he fatally shot Hortman, her husband, and their family dog. The Hoffmans expressed their heartbreak over the loss of their friends, noting the close ties between their families.

“We are heartbroken to know that our friends Melissa and Mark Hortman were assassinated,” the Hoffmans stated.

By the Numbers

43 hours was the duration of the largest manhunt in Minnesota history, leading to Boelter’s arrest.

The gunman allegedly had a hit list with 70 names, primarily targeting Democrats and figures associated with Planned Parenthood.

Background Context

The attacks are believed to be politically motivated, with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz condemning the violence as “targeted political violence.” The Hoffmans acknowledged the risks associated with public service, emphasizing the need for civility in political discourse.

“As a society, as a nation, as a community, we must work together to return to a level of civility that allows us all to live peacefully,” they urged.

What Comes Next

Boelter remains in federal custody on murder charges. Meanwhile, the Hoffmans are recovering from their injuries, with John in critical but stable condition and Yvette in stable condition following surgeries.

The tragic events have sparked discussions on the safety of public officials and the increasing polarization in political environments. As the investigation continues, the community grapples with the impact of the violence and the broader implications for political discourse in the state.
