Akeeagok and Main Compete for Nunavut’s Premier Position
In a decisive moment for Nunavut’s political landscape, two Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) have been nominated to lead the territory as premier. David Akeeagok and John Main faced off during a leadership forum on March 5, 2024, in Iqaluit. A secret ballot to select the next premier is set to take place later in the day after both candidates presented their visions to their colleagues.
Candidates Outline Their Priorities
During their speeches, each candidate laid out their priorities for Nunavut. Akeeagok, representing Iqaluit-Niaqunnguu, emphasized the critical issues of food security, housing, and addiction treatment. He stated that Arctic sovereignty would remain a significant concern over the next four years, saying, “As such a vast region, we are at the centre of attention. We must be at the table for a national and international discussion.”
In addition to these priorities, Akeeagok called for a return to Inuit self-sufficiency practices that existed prior to colonial contact. He expressed that this historical spirit should inform current territorial government policies.
Main, who represents Arviat North-Whale Cove, positioned himself as a “communicator” and “bridge-builder.” He acknowledged he does not have a definitive governance plan but believes that diversifying revenue sources is essential for the territory’s future. He pointed to natural gas as a potential opportunity for generating revenue. “Regardless of who’s chosen today as premier and to go into cabinet, I want you all to know that I really am hopeful and optimistic,” Main stated. “I believe that Nunavummiut have chosen well.”
Next Steps in the Leadership Process
Following the candidates’ addresses, the other MLAs will have the opportunity to question Akeeagok and Main before voting. The successful candidate will then be responsible for appointing eight cabinet members, whose portfolios will be determined later.
Earlier in the day, the assembly elected David Joanasie, MLA for South Baffin, as Speaker. Joanasie will oversee the proceedings for the rest of the session, guiding the assembly through this crucial leadership transition.
The outcome of this vote will not only determine the next premier but also shape the future direction of Nunavut’s governance, reflecting the priorities and aspirations of its residents.
