Members of the B.C. General Employees Union (BCGEU) have voted overwhelmingly in favor of a new four-year contract, concluding a prolonged period of negotiations marked by significant job actions. Approximately 79% of union members participated in the voting process, with 89.3% endorsing the tentative agreement. This resolution comes after months of escalating tensions between the union and the provincial government, which were characterized by strikes and walkouts by public sector workers.

The ratified contract includes a 12% wage increase over the four years, reflecting an effort to address the long-standing demands for better compensation. The agreement was achieved following eight days of mediation led by experienced mediators Vince Ready and Amanda Rogers. The contract also introduces a general wage increase of 3% each year, enhanced job protections, and an expedited grievance tribunal process for handling disputes.

In a statement shared by the bargaining committee, the union expressed gratitude to its members, stating, “This vote marks the conclusion of a long and challenging round of bargaining, one defined by your strength, unity, and unwavering commitment to fairness.” The committee emphasized that the collective efforts of members—demonstrated through picket shifts and solidarity actions—were crucial in achieving this outcome.

Beyond wage increases, the new contract offers improvements in benefits, including enhancements to vision care and counseling services. It also outlines plans for a review of excluded positions to determine if they should be reinstated to union representation. Furthermore, a new category for fully remote workers will be established, providing them with specific protections.

The ratification follows eight weeks of escalating job actions, which saw over 25,000 non-essential public sector employees participating, including a notable strike involving B.C. Liquor and Cannabis stores. This collective action underscores the determination of public sector workers to advocate for fair treatment and respect in the workplace.

With this new contract in place, the BCGEU aims to strengthen its position and improve working conditions for its members, setting a precedent for future negotiations within the public sector.
