Two candidates are contesting the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) position in Baker Lake, both prioritizing the urgent need for improvements to the local health centre. Incumbent MLA Craig Simailak highlighted his commitment to this cause, noting recent progress. “Continue the push for a new health centre for Baker Lake, as we finally had pre-planning studies approved,” Simailak stated, emphasizing this as one of the primary reasons for his re-election campaign.

Challenger Simeon Mikkungwak, a former MLA for Baker Lake, echoed Simailak’s sentiments, underscoring the inadequacy of the current facility. “A larger health centre is essential to meet the needs of our growing population and the illnesses we face,” Mikkungwak asserted.

The candidates also addressed the impending closure of Agnico Eagle’s Amaruq gold mine and Meadowbank processing site, set for 2028. Both contenders warned that this closure could significantly decrease job opportunities in the region, necessitating proactive measures from the next MLA. “We must bring skilled trades and culinary arts to Baker Lake to enhance our workforce while preparing for the mine’s closure,” Simailak recommended. Mikkungwak concurred, stressing the importance of job creation in light of the community facing economic challenges following the mine’s shutdown. “We need to pursue economic development opportunities as we navigate the post-closure impact,” he said.

Simailak is also advocating for the establishment of a new elder-care facility to replace the one that closed in 2018. “We need to work with partners to get a new elder-care facility up and running,” he explained. Mikkungwak emphasized transparency and communication, stating, “It is vital to work closely with community residents and keep them informed about these developments.”

Residents of Baker Lake will have the opportunity to vote from October 13 to October 23, 2023, between noon and 7 p.m. at the Old Co-op Store. Additionally, on October 27, 2023, voting will take place at the community hall from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

As the election approaches, both candidates remain focused on addressing the health and economic needs of Baker Lake, reflecting the community’s priorities and the challenges ahead.
