Bernia Martin Elected as New Deputy Warden for Oxford County
Woodstock City Councillor Bernia Martin has been elected as the new Deputy Warden of Oxford County, succeeding Ingersoll Mayor Brian Petrie. The election took place among her peers, where Martin secured a decisive victory against Woodstock Mayor Jerry Acchione with a vote tally of 7-3.
Transition of Leadership
The role of Deputy Warden is contested annually, contrasting with the Warden’s four-year term. Martin, who previously used the surname Wheaton, reflected on her journey towards this position, sharing a light-hearted anecdote about her aspirations for the role. In a written statement, she recounted a conversation with a friend in October 2023 during which they discussed the Deputy Warden position. The friend had suggested, “Deputy Warden Wheaton,” leading Martin to realize that she needed to revert to her original surname to maintain a serious demeanor in council meetings.
“Thanks Dr. Seuss. In all seriousness and with rhyming aside, I am delighted to have been nominated by my peers and I am humbled to have been elected to this position,” Martin stated.
Expressing gratitude, Martin emphasized the valuable lessons learned from her fellow councillors. She anticipates a year filled with discussions, meeting preparations, and debates, drawing on her experiences as Chair of the South Central Ontario Region of the Economic Development Corporation and Chair of Southwest Public Health. She believes these roles have equipped her to step in for Warden Marcus Ryan when necessary.
Reflections from Outgoing Deputy Warden
Outgoing Deputy Warden Brian Petrie shared his appreciation for the role, stating, “I want to thank my colleagues at council for this amazing opportunity.” Petrie highlighted his collaboration with Warden Ryan, noting that his professionalism made the role easier. He expressed that his time as Deputy Warden passed swiftly, filled with meaningful experiences, including chairing meetings and representing Oxford at various events.
Petrie also conveyed a deeper understanding of the community, saying, “I gained further insight into what truly makes Oxford a place we are lucky to call home.” His tenure as Deputy Warden has left him with cherished memories and a greater appreciation for the residents of Oxford County.
As Martin steps into her new role, she looks forward to contributing to the governance of Oxford County and engaging with the community in meaningful ways. Her election marks a new chapter in the county’s leadership and underscores the importance of local governance in fostering community development.
