On May 28, 2025, Lockhart Plumbing and Heating Ltd. pleaded guilty to failing to comply with safety regulations, specifically regarding the proper training and supervision of their workers.

The incident occurred on October 19, 2022, when a plumber was dispatched to a residence to investigate a sewer odour. While attempting to clear a drain, the worker encountered hydrogen sulphide, a hazardous gas that can be lethal even in low concentrations. Unfortunately, the employee did not have the necessary training to handle such a dangerous substance, which led to the fatal exposure.

In response to the case, Manitoba Labour and Immigration emphasized the critical need for employers to ensure that their staff are adequately informed about potential hazards.
