Calgary’s municipal election is gearing up, and residents will have a unique opportunity to participate in the voting process through the Vote Bus. From October 6 to 11, 2025, Calgarians can board the bus at various locations across the city to cast their votes for mayor, councillor, and school board trustee, regardless of their home ward.

The Vote Bus will make 11 stops throughout Calgary, strategically placed near major locations such as the Dream Centre, McMahon Stadium, and multiple LRT stations. This initiative aims to provide an accessible and convenient voting option for busy commuters.

Innovative Approach to Voting

The Vote Bus, a New Flyer Low Floor, model D40LF, has been part of Calgary Transit since 1999. Ryan Murray, communications supervisor for Calgary Transit, remarked on the bus’s history of community engagement. “Today we are using it for the Vote Bus,” Murray stated. “This bus has quite a history. I know it’s been used in several other promotional affairs here in the city.”

In addition to serving as the Vote Bus, it has previously operated as a karaoke and trivia bus. Notably, it also held a temporary renaming of Route 19 in 2022 to honor local platinum recording artists Tegan and Sara.

Kate Martin, returning elections officer for the City of Calgary, noted that the Vote Bus initiative began in 2013. After a pause during the 2021 election due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is now making a notable comeback. Martin explained that the majority of the bus stops are located near LRT stations during peak commuting hours, facilitating voter access.

Enhancing Voter Accessibility

Recognizing the busy lives of many Calgarians, Martin emphasized the importance of bringing the voting process to the people. “We know Calgarians are busy, we know they’re commuting to and from work, school, so we’re hoping to come to them where they are,” she said.

This year, the Vote Bus will also include stops in newer communities like Cornerstone and Sage Hill. This pilot program aims to expand voter accessibility to areas that may not have had as many resources in previous elections.

Murray assured the public that the bus will be parked in a manner that does not disrupt the daily commute. “It’ll be located in an area that’s visible along a walking area where people can access it easily and intuitively,” he explained, “as well as ensuring it doesn’t get in the way of the commute itself for people.”

The Vote Bus initiative reflects a broader commitment by Elections Calgary to enhance voter engagement and participation in local governance. By utilizing innovative solutions like this, the city aims to ensure that every voice is heard in the upcoming municipal election.
