The North American Indigenous Games Council has officially withdrawn Calgary’s hosting rights for the 2027 Games, citing significant challenges faced by the local organizing body. The decision comes amid concerns over operational funding and unmet requirements, leaving the Host Society unable to effectively plan and deliver the event as intended.

The Host Society expressed disappointment, stating that the issues stemmed from Tourism Calgary withholding committed operational funding from the City of Calgary. This lack of resources, according to the Society, hindered their ability to prepare for the Games. “As Indigenous people, we recognize these challenges within the broader context of systemic barriers that continue to limit our self-determination,” the Society noted. They emphasized that the decision contradicts commitments to reconciliation in sport and culture.

In response, Tourism Calgary dismissed the allegations as inaccurate. A representative stated, “The 2027 Host Society did not meet key milestones and conditions set by the NAIG Council and funding partners.” They further indicated that given the challenges that arose during the planning phase, they support the Council’s difficult decision to withdraw the Games from Calgary.

The Host Society has announced plans to rebrand and develop a new Indigenous sporting event that will remain entirely Indigenous-led, ensuring that both sport and culture are prominently featured. This initiative aims to create an environment that reflects the values and traditions of Indigenous communities while promoting their leadership in the sporting landscape.

As the situation unfolds, the implications for both Calgary and the Indigenous community remain significant. The withdrawal not only affects the local economy and tourism but also highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Indigenous organizations in securing necessary support and resources.

With the cancellation of the 2027 Games in Calgary, the North American Indigenous Games Council continues to seek a location that aligns with its vision and values, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and respect for Indigenous self-determination moving forward.
