The Government of Canada has issued an urgent travel advisory for Indonesia, specifically highlighting the popular tourist destination of Bali. The advisory, updated on September 5, 2023, urges Canadians to exercise heightened caution due to various risks, including visa scams and ongoing political and social tensions.

Increased Visa Scam Warnings

Canadian travellers are particularly warned about a rise in visa scams throughout Indonesia, including Bali. The government stresses the importance of avoiding unsolicited offers for visa extensions, which can lead to serious complications such as overstaying a visa, hefty fines, deportation, or being banned from re-entry.

The advisory explicitly states, “Never hand over your passport to individuals or agencies claiming to offer visa services. Use official government channels to manage or renew visas and ensure your information and documents remain secure.” This guidance aims to protect travellers from potential legal issues and ensure their safety during their stay.

According to the Directorate General of Immigration of the Republic of Indonesia, Canadian citizens must obtain a visitor visa before entering the country. This visa can be acquired in advance or upon arrival at designated entry points. Indonesia enforces strict immigration and visa regulations, and violations can lead to significant penalties, including detention in immigration facilities.

Health and Safety Concerns

In addition to visa-related issues, the travel advisory highlights ongoing health risks, including a rabies outbreak in Bali.
