Prime Minister Mark Carney and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre expressed a desire for collaboration following their first one-on-one meeting on January 11, 2026, at Parliament Hill. As the winter parliamentary session commences, both leaders underscored the necessity of swift legislative action to address pressing issues facing Canadians.

In a post on X, Carney emphasized the urgency for Parliament to “move swiftly to deliver for Canadians,” highlighting the importance of unity during this critical time. His message followed a roughly 30-minute discussion with Poilievre, where they covered various topics, including legislative priorities and economic strategies.

The Liberal government currently holds 169 seats, three short of a majority, necessitating opposition support to pass new legislation. A spokesperson for Poilievre characterized the meeting as “good,” noting that the Conservative leader pushed for fast-tracked policies aimed at making Canada more affordable, safe, and self-reliant.

During the meeting, Poilievre advocated for lower taxes and expressed concern over the federal deficit. He also shared specific proposals aimed at increasing investment in the Canadian economy. “Today I met the Prime Minister to push policies to make Canada affordable, safe, and self-reliant,” Poilievre stated on social media, reiterating his commitment to work alongside the government on these issues.

According to a senior government source who spoke to CTV News, Carney intended to discuss several key areas where he seeks collaboration from the opposition. This includes the Budget Implementation Act and funding for programs addressing affordability. The Prime Minister is also interested in tackling crime and violence through legislative measures, including Bill C-9, which aims to protect places of worship from threats.

Before the meeting, Poilievre indicated that he wanted to work with the government to alleviate the cost of living. “We have been working to fast track anything that we believe, however modest, might make life a little more affordable,” he said. He noted that Carney has been slow to advance certain initiatives, stating, “Mr. Carney has been the one holding up the show.”

Additionally, Poilievre expressed interest in collaborating with the federal government to address trade tensions with the United States. He reminded Carney of a previous commitment to secure a trade deal by July 2025 and emphasized the importance of reducing tariffs to support Canadian workers.

In a video posted on January 9, Poilievre called for an urgent meeting with Carney, emphasizing the need for practical solutions and a willingness to consider various ideas to expedite results. Conservative campaign manager Steve Outhouse commented on Poilievre’s recent conciliatory tone, acknowledging the serious challenges facing Canada, both domestically and internationally. “For this domestic agenda that’s there, let’s get it done,” Outhouse urged.

Earlier in January, Poilievre had penned an open letter to Carney, offering assistance to “turn rhetoric into reality” by fast-tracking policies that have been delayed. This meeting follows the unanimous approval of a Conservative motion aimed at accelerating discussions over Bill C-19, the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit Act, which is expected to pass through the House of Commons by January 13, 2026.

Despite the recent outreach efforts, a senior government source indicated that plans were already in place for Carney to meet with opposition leaders prior to Poilievre’s public message. As both leaders seek to navigate the complexities of governance, their collaboration may prove essential in addressing the challenges that lie ahead for Canada.
