Travelers planning to cross the border between Canada and the United States via the Chief Mountain port of entry will need to make alternative arrangements as the crossing will close for the winter season. The closure takes effect at 18:00 MST on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, and is scheduled to reopen on May 14, 2026.

Located on Highway 6 just east of Waterton Lakes National Park in southern Alberta, the Chief Mountain border crossing operates only during the warmer months due to its high elevation and the harsh winter conditions prevalent in the region. This seasonal closure is a routine measure to ensure safety and accessibility for travelers.

For those looking to travel south into Montana, Highway 17 provides a connection to Highway 89 north of Babb. An alternative year-round crossing is available at the Carway border crossing, which offers consistent access between the two countries. Other nearby border crossings in southern Alberta include Coutts and Del Bonita, which remain open throughout the year.

According to the Canada Border Services Agency, as of September 8, 2025, there have been a total of 49,049 travelers crossing at Chief Mountain. This figure represents a decline of over 8,000 compared to the same period last year, reflecting changing travel patterns and conditions.

Travelers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and explore other available border crossings during the closure period to ensure a smooth transit experience.
