Carmen Prefontaine has officially registered as a candidate for the Elmwood-East Kildonan city councillor position. This follows the passing of former councillor Jason Schreyer in April. Prefontaine, a dedicated employee of the City of Winnipeg and current vice-president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 500, confirmed her candidacy earlier this month.

The byelection is scheduled for October 25, and Prefontaine is the third candidate to enter the race. She has been endorsed by the Winnipeg Labour Council, which recognized her commitment to public service and community advocacy.

Prefontaine has been part of the city’s workforce for approximately 15 years, initially working in the 311 service and the water and waste department before transitioning to human resources. Her extensive experience within the city’s operations positions her as a knowledgeable candidate for the role.

Alongside Prefontaine, two other candidates are vying for the councillor seat: community advocate Emma Durand-Wood and child-care assistant Zekaria Selahadin. Collectively, they will compete to represent the interests of Elmwood-East Kildonan residents following the loss of Schreyer, who had served in the position prior to his untimely death.

The upcoming byelection presents an opportunity for voters in the ward to select a representative who aligns with their views and priorities. As the election date approaches, the candidates are expected to outline their platforms and engage with the community to garner support.

This local political development underscores the importance of civic engagement and the role of dedicated individuals in shaping their communities. The outcome will not only influence local governance but will also reflect the aspirations and needs of the residents of Elmwood-East Kildonan.
