Community Mourns the Loss of Ioannis “John” Vlahakis at 89
The community of North Bay is mourning the loss of Ioannis “John” Vlahakis, who passed away on February 28, 2026, at the age of 89. Surrounded by his family, John’s death marks the end of a life rich in love, hard work, and devotion. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Chryssoula, with whom he shared 61 years of marriage, along with three daughters and three grandchildren who will carry forward his legacy.
John Vlahakis was born on February 8, 1937, in Pakia Lakonia, Greece. His early years included working as an electrician’s apprentice before he made the pivotal decision to emigrate to Canada at the age of 26. Settling in Montreal, John soon met Chryssoula, and they married in 1964. The couple later moved to North Bay in 1970, where they would spend over five decades.
In North Bay, John established himself as a skilled painter and eventually founded his own successful painting business. He built a solid reputation based on honesty, dedication, and a consistent smile. His commitment to his work was matched only by his love for family, which he prioritized above all else.
John is survived by his three daughters: Tasia “Tess” (married to Nick), Gioula (married to Tim), and Titsa. His role as a grandfather, or Pappou, was cherished by his grandchildren: Jesse, Alexandra, and Alexe. He is predeceased by his parents, Peter and Tasia Vlahakis, as well as several siblings.
His family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at the North Bay Regional Health Centre, particularly on the A3 and C3 Wings. They extend special thanks to Dr. Tuomi and Dr. King for their compassion and support during John’s final months.
Visitation will take place at McGuinty Funeral Home in North Bay on March 10, 2026, from 11:00 to 13:00. A funeral service will follow immediately afterward. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the North Bay Regional Health Centre in John’s memory.
As the community reflects on John Vlahakis’s life, his family will cherish his memory and the impact he had on their lives. “We love you so much, Ba! We will miss you, Pappou!” his family expressed in a heartfelt tribute.
