Conservatives Criticize Carney for Dismissive Trump Comments
OTTAWA – Conservative Members of Parliament expressed strong disapproval of Prime Minister Mark Carney on November 24, 2025, following remarks he made regarding stalled trade discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump. Carney’s comments, made during a press briefing in Johannesburg, included the dismissive response, “Who cares?” when asked about his last conversation with Trump.
While addressing reporters, Carney indicated that both he and Trump have been preoccupied with various responsibilities. He further stated that there was no urgent matter requiring his attention from the U.S. President, a sentiment that did not sit well with Conservative leaders.
During the daily question period in the House of Commons, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre seized the opportunity to criticize Carney. He highlighted that Carney had campaigned during the previous spring election on his capability to manage relations with the Trump administration effectively. Poilievre’s comments underscored the perceived importance of maintaining diplomatic dialogue, especially regarding trade issues that heavily impact the Canadian economy.
In response, Government House leader Steve MacKinnon shifted the focus away from Carney’s remarks, indicating a reluctance to engage with Poilievre’s line of questioning. The absence of Carney during the question period was notable, as he had just returned from participating in the G20 summit in South Africa.
Carney’s remarks have sparked a broader conversation about the role of leadership in international relations, particularly in the context of trade. With significant economic ties between Canada and the United States, the effectiveness of communication between leaders is often scrutinized, especially when negotiations face obstacles.
As debates continue in Parliament, the implications of Carney’s comments may resonate beyond the immediate political landscape, influencing public perception of his leadership and diplomatic strategies.
