Doug Ford Rides Snowmobile to Support Muskoka Hospital Fundraising
Ontario Premier Doug Ford visited the Huntsville region on March 2, 2024, to support fundraising efforts aimed at constructing two new hospitals in Muskoka. The visit coincided with the ‘Trails For Life’ event held in Port Sydney, which was organized by the local snowmobiling community to benefit the South Muskoka Hospital Foundation and Huntsville Hospital Foundation. Ford joined Graydon Smith, Member of Provincial Parliament for Parry Sound Muskoka, as special guests of the event.
During an interview with CTV News, Premier Ford expressed his commitment to the hospital projects, stating, “We’re going to build a new hospital in Huntsville and a new one in Bracebridge, and everyone’s pitching in and we’re raising money to build those two hospitals.” He estimated that each facility would cost approximately $600 million, emphasizing the need for improved healthcare infrastructure, particularly during the summer months when the region’s population significantly increases.
Support from the Snowmobiling Community
The Premier’s visit included a snowmobiling convoy featuring MPP Smith, MPP Jill Dunlop, and officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). They celebrated what has been a successful sledding season before arriving at the event at the Port Sydney Community Hall. Ford acknowledged the contributions of snowmobilers, noting, “I want to thank all the people riding the sleds; we put $5 million into it this year.” This funding has helped preserve the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs’ trail network, preventing the loss of 4,500 kilometres of its total 30,000-kilometre trail system.
MPP Smith reflected on the day’s activities, stating, “It was a lot of fun to be able to ride in on snowmobiles with Premier Ford today. We’re getting paid back with perfect snowmobiling conditions.” According to the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC), nearly all trails across the province are currently open and fully accessible.
Future of Hospital Construction
While details regarding the construction timeline for the new hospitals remain unclear, the province confirmed that the projects are progressing through feasibility and study stages. The commitment from the government highlights a growing focus on enhancing healthcare services in rural areas, particularly as Muskoka attracts increased seasonal populations.
As Premier Ford emphasized the importance of community involvement in these initiatives, the event showcased the strong support for improved healthcare facilities in Muskoka, demonstrating the collaborative efforts between government officials and local organizations.
