Eby Appoints Vancouver Island MLAs to Boost Defence and Health Sectors
British Columbia Premier David Eby has announced the appointment of two Vancouver Island Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) to key parliamentary secretary positions, aiming to enhance the province’s focus on defence and health care. Darlene Rotchford, MLA for Esquimalt–Colwood, will serve as the parliamentary secretary for armed forces development and veterans affairs, while Stephanie Higginson, MLA for Ladysmith–Oceanside, will take on the role of parliamentary secretary for primary care access.
In a statement, Eby emphasized that these appointments are part of the government’s broader strategy to address significant challenges and leverage opportunities within the province. He highlighted the importance of expanding defence and aerospace initiatives as well as improving health services. “British Columbia is facing big challenges and even bigger opportunities,” Eby stated.
Focus on Defence and Economic Growth
Rotchford’s new role will involve fostering relationships with military organizations across British Columbia. Her previous experience includes serving as the parliamentary secretary for labour and as the provincial government’s military liaison, positioning her well to align skills training with emerging needs in national defence. The provincial government’s Look West strategy aims to connect skills training with major sectors such as aerospace, shipbuilding, and defence, which are poised for growth with increased federal investment.
The B.C. government’s plans reflect a commitment to enhancing its defence capabilities, responding to signals from Ottawa regarding rising expenditures in these areas. Rotchford’s focus will be crucial as the province aims to develop a skilled workforce that meets the demands of these expanding industries.
Enhancing Access to Health Care
Higginson, who has previously chaired the government caucus, will support Health Minister Josie Osborne in initiatives aimed at improving access to primary care throughout British Columbia. Her responsibilities will include advancing community health centres and fostering team-based care models, particularly in rural and remote communities. This focus on accessibility reflects ongoing concerns about health disparities within the province, which the government is keen to address.
Both appointments signal a strategic move by Eby to ensure that Vancouver Island has a more substantial influence on critical provincial priorities. By placing experienced MLAs in these roles, the government aims to strengthen its approach to two essential sectors that impact the lives of many British Columbians.
As these developments unfold, the province anticipates that the combined efforts of Rotchford and Higginson will lead to positive outcomes in both defence and health care, aligning with the government’s goals of expanding services and enhancing economic growth in British Columbia.
