Edmonton Police Report Decrease in Traffic Tickets Issued
Edmonton is witnessing a significant decline in traffic tickets issued during police operations. According to a recent news release from the Edmonton Police Service (EPS), the latest campaign, called Operation 24 Hours, resulted in only 323 tickets being issued to drivers on September 11, 2025. This marks a notable decrease compared to previous operations.
The operation focused on addressing various traffic violations, including speeding and distracted driving. Out of the 323 tickets, 68 were related to speeding, while eight involved distracted driving. Additionally, 38 tickets were issued for moving violations, and 108 infractions pertained to equipment and documentation issues. The campaign also recorded one criminal code driving offence and a separate criminal charge following a vehicle stop. One notable incident involved a woman who was clocked driving at 105 km/h in a 50 km/h zone near Scona Road and 94 Avenue, resulting in a mandatory court summons.
Automated enforcement tools were also active during this operation, with 98 red-light violations captured. EPS officials emphasized the importance of adhering to speed limits, especially given the rise in fatal collisions in the city. “Whether there’s a camera or an officer nearby or not, drivers can control their own speed and improve road safety for everyone,” stated Sgt. Rob David from the traffic services division.
The latest ticket numbers present a stark contrast to previous campaigns. In May 2025, for instance, police issued 695 traffic tickets, while 902 violations were recorded in September of last year. A peak was observed on October 11, 2024, when a staggering 1,342 tickets were handed out in a single day.
The decrease in traffic citations has been partly attributed to changes in automated enforcement tools, including the implementation of photo radar systems. As of the end of July 2025, Edmonton had experienced 21 fatal crashes, highlighting the ongoing challenges related to road safety.
As the EPS continues its efforts to enhance traffic safety, the focus remains on encouraging responsible driving practices among Edmontonians. The community is reminded that compliance with traffic laws is crucial, regardless of enforcement presence.
