Ethics Commissioner Clears Manitoba Minister of Conflict Allegations
A recent investigation led by Manitoba’s ethics commissioner concluded that Public Service Delivery Minister Mintu Sandhu did not breach conflict of interest regulations. The ruling, issued on October 26, 2023, determined that Sandhu’s actions were in compliance with the Conflict of Interest (Members and Ministers) Act.
The inquiry was initiated on October 27 following a request from Progressive Conservative MLA Josh Guenter. Guenter raised concerns that Sandhu was in a conflict of interest due to his department awarding a contract to Duffy’s Taxi, a company linked to Sandhu’s wife.
In his report, ethics commissioner Jeffrey Schnoor clarified that Sandhu had no involvement in the decision-making process regarding the contract. The report outlined that the contract was awarded prior to Sandhu’s appointment as a minister and before he took his position in the cabinet.
This ruling alleviates any concerns regarding improper conduct by Sandhu, reaffirming that he acted within the legal boundaries set forth by the province’s conflict of interest legislation. The commissioner’s findings underline the importance of transparency and proper governance in public service roles.
In light of the decision, Sandhu expressed his relief and reiterated his commitment to ethical governance. He stated that he would continue to serve the public with integrity and uphold the standards expected of his office.
The investigation’s outcome serves as a reminder of the checks and balances in place within Manitoba’s political framework, ensuring accountability among its elected officials.
