Firefighters Rescue Dump Truck Driver After Rollover Incident
A driver of a dump truck was airlifted to hospital in Calgary on September 29, 2023, following a single-vehicle rollover incident. The accident occurred on Dorr Road in the Grasmere area near Edwards Lake. Emergency responders from the Elk Valley and South Country Rural Fire & Rescue arrived on the scene shortly after the incident was reported.
Emergency Response and Rescue Efforts
According to Michael Hockley, Chief of Elk Valley and South Country Rural Fire & Rescue, upon arrival, firefighters discovered a dump truck that was approximately half full of asphalt had overturned. “Our members worked as quickly as possible to secure the scene and safely extricate the lone occupant,” Hockley stated.
Six firefighters from Jaffray and another six from Elko were dispatched to the scene. The initial call came in just before 18:00 local time, and emergency crews worked for just over two hours to manage the situation.
STARS Air Ambulance was called to the scene and successfully landed nearby to transport the driver to hospital for further assessment and treatment. Hockley noted the importance of their training in situations like this, emphasizing, “We train throughout the year on utilizing specialized equipment and skills in things like vehicle extrication for calls like this one.”

The swift action by the firefighting team illustrates the dedication and preparedness of local emergency services. Hockley expressed pride in the team’s ability to come together in a complex environment, underscoring the effective coordination required during such incidents.
