Halifax Hosts Events for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

The city of Halifax is commemorating the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation with a series of events this week, along with celebrations for Mi’kmaw history month. Residents are encouraged to participate in activities that honor the history and culture of the Mi’kmaw people, marking an important moment in Canadian history.
Beginning on Monday, Halifax City Hall will be illuminated in orange until Wednesday, symbolizing support for Indigenous communities. On Tuesday, residents can join in various activities for all ages hosted by the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.. These events aim to engage the community in meaningful discussions and activities relating to Indigenous history and reconciliation.
A significant highlight of the week will occur on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. with a flag-raising ceremony at Grand Parade. This event will feature a reading of the proclamation for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Treaty Day by Mayor Andy Fillmore, further emphasizing the city’s commitment to honoring Indigenous rights and history.
October is also recognized as Mi’kmaw history month, with this year’s theme focusing on “storytelling and storytellers.” This initiative seeks to celebrate the rich narratives of the Mi’kmaw people, shaped by their connection to the land and waters. The Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) encourages residents to explore these themes throughout the month and participate in various storytelling events.
For those interested in learning more about the week’s activities and how to engage with the community, additional information can be found on the city’s official website. The HRM’s efforts aim to foster understanding and respect for Indigenous cultures, promoting a path toward reconciliation.
