Impaired Driving Suspect Remains in Custody Ahead of Bail Hearing

A 19-year-old man, Kane Anignostis Burrows, accused of impaired driving and fleeing a traffic stop, will remain in custody until at least September 3, 2023. During a hearing at the Calgary Court of Justice on Monday, Burrows’s lawyer, Alain Hepner, requested an adjournment to allow time to develop a potential bail release plan.
Hepner informed Justice Sean Dunnigan that he intends to keep the Crown prosecutor, Greg Piper, updated on their progress. “He’s in custody, he’s detained, I’m not making a judicial release application just yet,” Hepner stated, requesting that Burrows’s appearance in court be waived.
Burrows faces multiple charges, including impaired driving and having an unlawful amount of alcohol in his system. These charges stem from an incident on the morning of August 8, 2023, when police reported that a BMW M5 fled a traffic stop on MacLeod Trail. According to a police statement, the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when the driver attempted to make a turn onto 58th Avenue S.W., ultimately crashing into a parked vehicle and causing damage to seven others in the vicinity.
The Crown has indicated it will seek to revoke Burrows’s bail related to the new charges. He is also facing charges connected to a fatal crash that occurred on December 23, 2022. In that incident, a 2018 BMW M240i lost control on Glenmore Trail S.W. and collided with a stationary crane, resulting in life-threatening injuries for an 18-year-old passenger, Zachary Legault, who later died from his injuries.
Burrows is scheduled for a preliminary inquiry in November to address the six charges, including impaired driving causing death. The legal proceedings continue to unfold, raising significant concerns about road safety and the consequences of impaired driving.
