In a trial taking place at the Brandon Court of King’s Bench, a mother testified about her daughter’s troubling relationship with a 39-year-old man, which began when the girl was just 13 years old in 2023. The accused, now 41, faces multiple charges, including two counts of child luring, distributing sexually explicit material to a minor, possessing child pornography, creating child pornography, and inviting a minor to engage in sexual touching.

According to the mother, she had known the accused for approximately six or seven years before the allegations surfaced. She described their relationship as casual, stating they had worked together and occasionally ran into each other in town. In the fall of 2022, the accused began visiting her home to socialize with her family, but she believed their interactions were harmless. “I thought they were just friends,” she said, indicating she was unaware of the inappropriate nature of their relationship.

During her testimony, the mother recounted that the accused had stopped coming inside her house and instead would park his truck outside, where they would socialize. She acknowledged that her daughter had babysat for him around six times. However, it was not until May 2023 that she discovered concerning text messages between her daughter and the accused, including an explicit photo of her daughter.

“I panicked. I thought something was going on, and still to this day I’m not sure if more happened,” she testified, visibly emotional. She explained that her children did not have their own phones and used hers to communicate. Following her discovery, she reported the situation to the police without discussing the messages with her daughter.

The trial also featured testimony from Manitoba RCMP officers. Constable Sheldon Verspeek, a digital forensic examiner, recounted his role in extracting data from the accused’s phone. His findings revealed disturbing content, including 18 unique images classified as child sexual abuse material. These images depicted minors engaging in sexual activity and suggestive poses.

Constable Kirandeep Hira, a member of the Internet Child Exploitation unit, analyzed the data and confirmed the presence of explicit material involving young girls. “The material located on the device was of females between the ages of one and 15 years old,” she stated. Hira noted that the search history included numerous queries related to “teen porn” and indicated that the accused appeared to be evading arrest by communicating with his ex-girlfriend regarding the ongoing investigation.

As the trial continues, the courtroom has focused on the gravity of the charges against the accused and the implications for the young complainant. The mother’s testimony sheds light on the complexities of the situation, revealing a troubling dynamic that raises significant concerns about child safety and parental awareness.

The accused is set to face further questioning, and the trial is expected to delve deeper into the evidence presented and the circumstances surrounding the allegations. The community remains attentive to the proceedings, recognizing the profound impact such cases have on families and society at large.
