Newfoundland and Labrador’s NDP Leader Jim Dinn Aims for Growth
Jim Dinn, the leader of Newfoundland and Labrador’s New Democratic Party (NDP), is poised to expand his party’s representation in the provincial legislature ahead of the upcoming general election on October 14, 2025. Dinn is the party’s sole member in the legislature and aims to secure more seats as he campaigns for the NDP.
Born and raised in St. John’s, Dinn has a long history in education, having worked as a teacher for over three decades in various schools across the province. His leadership experience includes serving as the president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers Association from 2013 to 2017, as well as holding positions on the executive council and board of directors of the Canadian Teachers’ Federation.
Dinn’s academic background includes studies in arts and education at Memorial University, followed by a Master of Education degree from Mount St. Vincent University. His political career began in earnest when he was first elected in 2019 to represent the St. John’s Centre district, a seat that has been held by the NDP since 2011. After the 2021 election, he was appointed interim leader of the party, officially assuming the role of leader in 2023.
As the election approaches, Dinn has been vocal about key issues affecting the province. He advocates for a guaranteed basic living income, arguing that meeting people’s essential needs can reduce the demand for chronic and acute health care solutions. He stated, “If people’s essential needs are met, there is less demand for chronic and acute health care solutions. It’s not flashy, but it’s important.”
Dinn’s leadership will be crucial as the NDP seeks to build on its current standing. The party faces competition from the ruling Liberal Party, led by John Hogan, who has called for the election. The political landscape in Newfoundland and Labrador is dynamic, with voters looking for solutions to pressing social and economic challenges.
As he prepares for the upcoming election, Dinn emphasizes the importance of addressing the needs of vulnerable populations and ensuring equitable access to resources. His commitment to these issues may resonate with constituents seeking change in the provincial government.
With the election date set, Dinn’s focus remains on rallying support and increasing the party’s legislative presence. The outcome could significantly impact the political landscape in Newfoundland and Labrador and shape the future direction of the NDP.
