Ottawa’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade Returns for Bicentennial in 2026
Ottawa will host its St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 7, 2026, marking the event’s return for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted celebrations. Organised by the Irish Society of the National Capital Region, this parade will coincide with the celebrations for the Bicentennial of Bytown, offering a renewed opportunity to honour Irish contributions to the city.
The Irish Society announced on their social media platforms that they have collaborated with the City of Ottawa, Ottawa Police Services, and the National Capital Commission to ensure a successful event. “We’re ready to celebrate in style on March 7, 2026,” the society stated. The parade will feature a new route starting at the Supreme Court of Canada on Wellington Street. From there, it will proceed east along Wellington Street, pass by Parliament Hill and the Rideau Canal, and then head north on Sussex Drive towards the ByWard Market.
This year’s parade is positioned not just as a festive gathering, but as a significant celebration of 200 years of Irish heritage in Ottawa. The Irish Society expressed their excitement, stating, “This is more than just a parade – it’s a celebration of 200 years of Irish contributions to building this great city.”
The St. Patrick’s Day Parade faced cancellations in previous years due to various challenges. The last event occurred in 2019, while the parade in 2020 was cancelled as a result of the pandemic. The 2023 parade was also called off due to insufficient volunteer support and funding, and the 2024 parade was cancelled after organisers failed to secure a necessary permit.
The decision to reinstate the parade comes after a careful assessment of costs and logistical needs. Last year, organisers noted that policing costs for a parade on Elgin Street would have exceeded $35,000, contributing to the decision to cancel the event.
As excitement builds towards the 2026 celebration, community members and those of Irish descent in Ottawa are gearing up for a vibrant return to tradition, ready to celebrate their heritage and the city’s rich history.
