Prime Minister Carney Charters Private Jet for Peace Summit in Egypt

Prime Minister Mark Carney took a charter flight to Egypt for a significant peace summit aimed at resolving the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. The decision came after Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) jets were unavailable due to other operational commitments, as confirmed by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). This trip to Sharm-el-Sheik was arranged on short notice, prompting the need for a private charter.
The PMO stated that the urgent nature of the summit, organized by the United States with invitations issued shortly before departure, contributed to the unavailability of CAF aircraft and crews. “Overlapping existing operational needs resulted in the option of a Canadian Armed Forces airbus flight and related crews being unavailable for this transport,” the PMO explained in a statement.
Charter Flight Arrangements and Costs
To facilitate the trip, the government sought quotes from multiple charter companies. According to the PMO, the charter flight selected was the lowest-cost option that met all operational and safety requirements. Notably, the total cost was lower than what it would have been to utilize a CAF Airbus. Although specific costs were not disclosed, this decision reflects careful budgeting amid logistical challenges.
Despite the short notice, the absence of available CAF aircraft raises questions. Online flight tracking indicated that one of the Airbus jets typically used by the Prime Minister was in Japan at the time. The military has faced scrutiny in the past for logistical issues, including a notable incident in 1999 when then-Prime Minister Jean Chretien was criticized for missing the funeral of King Hussein of Jordan due to similar unavailability of military transport.
Meeting of World Leaders
Carney departed Canada on Sunday and was scheduled to land in Egypt at 06:00 Eastern Daylight Time on Monday. He joined an assembly of global leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres, to discuss the peace agreement.
During his remarks at the summit, President Trump mistakenly referred to the Canadian leader as simply “the president,” noting the rushed nature of the event. “He knew the importance of this. He said, ‘I want to be there,’” Trump remarked, expressing gratitude for Carney’s presence despite the limited notice. Following Trump’s speech, Carney approached the podium, and the two leaders appeared to share a light-hearted moment regarding the mix-up.
In a departure from standard protocol, Canadian journalists were not invited to accompany Carney on this trip. The Prime Minister typically travels via government aircraft for security and scheduling reasons.
This peace summit represents a crucial moment for international diplomacy, with hopes for a resolution to long-standing conflicts in the Middle East. The outcomes of such meetings often hinge on the participation of key leaders, underscoring the importance of timely and adequate travel arrangements in diplomatic efforts.
