Prince Harry to Address Estate Agents Amidst Public Speaking Criticism
The Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, is set to deliver a keynote address at the Power House Conference for estate agents in Toronto, Canada, next month. This event, expected to host around 450 attendees, has sparked humor and skepticism among his former schoolmates, particularly considering Harry’s admitted struggles with public speaking.
In his memoir, Spare, Harry revealed that he often experiences intense anxiety before speeches, saying he would be “soaked in sweat” and unable to think clearly during public appearances. He even recounted a time when his brother, Prince William, teased him after a particularly challenging moment on stage. Despite these fears, Harry has accepted the invitation to speak at an event focused on real estate policy and the Canadian economy.
The conference organizers describe the gathering as an opportunity to hear from influential leaders and political insiders. Attendees from the Ontario Real Estate Association will pay C$299 (£163) for entry, while non-members face a higher fee of C$499 (£272). It remains unclear how much of this revenue will contribute to Harry’s speaking fee.
Harry’s old classmates from Eton College have expressed incredulity at his role as a speaker on housing supply. One former classmate humorously questioned the value of hearing Harry discuss such a topic, reflecting a broader skepticism regarding his qualifications in this area.
Over the years, Harry has gained some experience in real estate, notably purchasing a mansion in Montecito, California, for £19.5 million in 2020. This luxurious property features numerous amenities, including a wine cellar and a tennis court. The Duke has also dabbled in the Canadian housing market, primarily through visits to a home in Toronto linked to his wife, Meghan Markle, during her time filming the series Suits.
Harry and Meghan briefly resided in a mansion on Vancouver Island before relocating to Los Angeles as the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded. As he prepares for the conference, Harry may reflect on the contrasting paths taken by him and his brother. Recently, William delivered a powerful address at the COP30 climate-change summit in Brazil, addressing world leaders and highlighting the urgent need for environmental action.
William’s speech followed his presentation at the Earthshot Prize ceremony, where he awarded £1 million grants to five environmental activists. His initiatives have garnered significant financial support, with the charity’s income reaching a record £24 million in the latest financial year.
Meanwhile, Catherine, Princess of Wales, made headlines with her first public address in two years, urging business leaders to prioritize “time and tenderness” alongside profit at the Royal Foundation’s Centre for Early Childhood event in London.
While Harry has focused on charitable endeavors like the Invictus Games, his current speaking engagements suggest a need for additional income. After a recent meeting with King Charles III at Clarence House, Harry expressed a desire to strengthen family ties and return to the UK with Meghan and their children.
As he prepares to address a room full of estate agents next month, Harry may find himself questioning the choices that have led him away from royal duties and into the world of public speaking. The outcome of this engagement could shape perceptions of his role outside the monarchy and highlight the financial realities facing him and Meghan in their new life.
