Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe Confirms Bid for Third Term in 2028
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe has announced his intention to run for a third term in the next provincial election, scheduled for 2028. His declaration comes amid speculation and criticisms from opposition members. Speaking ahead of the Saskatchewan Party Convention in Saskatoon on Thursday, Moe expressed his commitment to continue serving, stating he is “100 per cent” focused on securing a fifth consecutive victory for his party.
In his remarks to reporters, Moe emphasized his dedication to working alongside current Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) and party volunteers as they prepare for the upcoming election. He noted that this effort would not only involve his current team but also include a broad network of supporters throughout the province, many of whom will participate in the convention this weekend. Moe hinted that his campaign could begin as early as “sooner” than 2028.
During the same press conference, members of the opposition NDP raised questions about potential successors within the Saskatchewan Party. NDP MLA Jared Clarke suggested that current Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill has aspirations for the premiership, prompting a retort from Speaker Todd Goudy, who questioned the relevance of such inquiries. NDP MLA Jordan McPhail echoed this sentiment regarding Attorney General Tim McLeod, suggesting that rumors of his leadership ambitions were also circulating.
Moe dismissed the opposition’s claims, asserting that the NDP lacks insight into the dynamics of the Saskatchewan Party caucus. He reaffirmed his focus on the responsibilities at hand rather than the speculation regarding leadership challenges.
Looking ahead to the 2024 provincial election, Moe articulated his plans to leave politics only when it serves the best interests of the party and the people of Saskatchewan. He remarked, “There are two ways people leave politics: one is you leave, or two, you get punted. I would hope that I’m able to find my way to the former.” His leadership has been marked by significant developments since he took over from former Premier Brad Wall in 2018, following Wall’s long tenure that began in 1999.
Moe has successfully led the Saskatchewan Party through two general elections, reinforcing his position as a prominent figure in provincial politics. As preparations for the convention continue, the focus will likely shift to the strategies and policies that will drive the party’s campaign for the next election cycle.
