Toronto Rally Draws Over 200,000 in Solidarity with Iran Protesters
A significant rally is underway in Toronto, where police anticipate more than 200,000 people will gather to express solidarity with anti-government protesters in Iran. The event is part of a larger global initiative dubbed the Global Day of Action, led by Iran’s exiled crown prince, Reza Pahlavi. The demonstration is expected to cause considerable traffic disruptions, prompting authorities to close sections of Yonge Street and North York Boulevard.
The Toronto rally is one of several planned in cities worldwide, including Munich and Los Angeles, as Iranians living abroad mobilize to demand regime change in their home country. The protests in Iran, which began in late December 2022 due to a severe economic crisis, have escalated from calls for economic reform to demands for the overthrow of the Islamic Republic. Some protesters are advocating for the restoration of the monarchy that was ousted in the 1979 revolution.
Iran has faced intense scrutiny over its response to the protests. The government has implemented a crackdown on dissent and imposed an internet blackout, claiming that over 3,000 people have died since the protests began. However, the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency reports that the actual death toll may exceed 7,000, based on their monitoring of previous unrest.
Previous Protests and Calls for Intervention
Today’s event follows a major protest in Toronto’s Sankofa Square two weeks ago, which also gathered substantial crowds—estimated at 150,000 participants. During that demonstration, many attendees voiced their demands for international intervention in Iran and an end to governmental repression.
The growing discontent among the Iranian populace is attributed to a series of compounding issues, primarily economic instability, which has caused the national currency to plummet. As the protests continue to gain momentum, the global Iranian diaspora is increasingly uniting to amplify their calls for change.
As demonstrators fill the streets of Toronto today, their voices resonate not only within Canada but also around the world, highlighting the urgency of the situation in Iran and the international community’s role in addressing it.
