Trump Confirms CIA Operations in Venezuela Amid Rising Tensions

President Donald Trump has officially confirmed that he authorized the CIA to conduct covert operations within Venezuela. This revelation comes alongside his consideration of military strikes targeting drug cartels operating in the region. Recent weeks have seen the United States carry out at least five strikes on vessels suspected of drug trafficking in the Caribbean, resulting in the deaths of 27 individuals.

Human rights experts appointed by the United Nations have characterized these operations as “extrajudicial executions.” Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump indicated that the U.S. is evaluating potential land-based military actions as part of this intensified approach. His administration seeks to apply pressure on Nicolas Maduro, whom the U.S. and various nations do not recognize as Venezuela’s legitimate leader due to disputed elections.

According to a report by the New York Times, Trump’s authorization allows the CIA to execute operations in Venezuela either independently or as part of broader U.S. military efforts. As of now, it remains unclear whether the CIA is actively planning these operations or if they are being considered as contingencies.

During a press briefing alongside FBI Director Kash Patel and Attorney General Pam Bondi, Trump addressed inquiries about the recent reports, stating, “I authorized for two reasons really. Number one, they [Venezuela] have emptied their prisons into the United States of America.” He added that significant amounts of drugs are entering the U.S. from Venezuela, primarily via maritime routes.

When pressed on whether the CIA’s authorization could lead to efforts aimed at unseating Maduro, who has a bounty of $50 million (£37 million) placed on him by the U.S., Trump refrained from providing a direct answer, responding, “Wouldn’t it be a ridiculous question for me to answer?”

The most recent U.S. strike occurred on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of six individuals when a boat was targeted near Venezuela’s coast. Trump later stated on Truth Social that “intelligence confirmed the vessel was trafficking narcotics, was associated with illicit narcoterrorist networks, and was transiting along a known” drug-trafficking corridor. However, U.S. officials have not specified which drug-trafficking organization was operating the targeted vessel or the identities of those aboard.

These military actions are part of a broader strategy to exert pressure on Maduro’s administration. This strategy includes the deployment of significant air and naval assets in the region, along with approximately 4,000 troops. A leaked memo recently sent to U.S. lawmakers indicated that the administration views its involvement with drug-trafficking organizations as a “non-international armed conflict.”

U.S. officials have alleged that Maduro is linked to an organization known as the Cartel of the Suns, which purportedly involves high-ranking Venezuelan military and security officials in drug trafficking operations. Maduro has consistently denied these accusations, and his government has condemned the recent strikes as unjustified actions against Venezuela.

As tensions escalate, the situation in Venezuela remains precarious, with the potential for increased military involvement by the United States raising concerns in Caracas. The international community is closely monitoring the developments, as the implications of U.S. actions could have far-reaching consequences for the region.
