Turkey has deployed F-16 fighter jets and attack helicopters to Somalia as part of an intensified military campaign against the al-Shabaab militant group. This move aims to protect Turkey’s growing interests in the Horn of Africa, where it has established a significant military presence.

According to sources familiar with the situation, several F-16s are now stationed in Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital, which is also home to Turkey’s largest overseas military base. This deployment enhances Turkey’s existing drone operations targeting al-Shabaab, an Islamist group affiliated with al-Qaeda that has conducted an insurgency against the Somali government for the past two decades.

Strengthening Military Operations

The Turkish government’s efforts to bolster its military capabilities in Somalia coincide with a broader strategy to expand its influence in the region. In addition to its military base, Turkey is in the process of constructing a nearby facility intended for missile and space rocket testing.

Turkey’s defense ministry has not publicly commented on the recent deployment. Meanwhile, Somali officials, including Defense Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi and Abdiaziz Golofyare, the director of communications at Somalia’s presidential palace, have not responded to inquiries regarding the matter.

Recent reports indicate that Turkey has conducted strikes against al-Shabaab in collaboration with the United States, which has also targeted Islamic State militants operating within Somalia. The military actions are part of a renewed effort by Somalia’s government to reclaim territory from the militants.

This week, Somalia’s cabinet announced a significant leadership change, appointing Ibrahim Mohamed Mohamud as the new head of the army, replacing Odowaa Yusuf Rageh. The government aims to revitalize its military operations against al-Shabaab under Mohamud’s leadership.

Turkey’s Expanding Role in Somalia

Turkey has maintained a military presence in Somalia since 2017, when it began training Somali soldiers in Mogadishu. Over the past decade, Turkey has significantly expanded its influence in Somalia through various initiatives, including defense, energy, and infrastructure projects. The Turkish government has announced plans to commence oil drilling off Somalia’s coast in the near future.

The recent military deployment comes in the wake of Somalia’s decision to terminate security and port agreements with the United Arab Emirates. This decision has intensified diplomatic tensions, as the UAE has been strengthening ties with the breakaway region of Somaliland, a move that has frustrated Turkey and its Middle Eastern allies, including Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

As Turkey increases its military involvement in Somalia, the dynamics of regional security and international relations in the Horn of Africa may shift significantly. The outcomes of these developments will be closely monitored by both domestic and international observers.
