Voting on the latest recommendations for government workers in Alberta will conclude on Wednesday, following a week of deliberation among members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE). These recommendations, presented by a mediator, were made available to union members last week, with online voting commencing on Friday.

The outcomes of this vote are crucial. Should the majority of AUPE members reject the recommendations, a strike could be initiated before September 9, 2024. The union has made it clear that the potential for industrial action hinges on the members’ decision regarding the proposed terms.

The mediator’s recommendations include a general salary increase of three per cent over a span of four years. Additional proposals feature weekend shift premiums for evening and night shifts, recognition of all provincially and federally designated holidays, enhanced mental health support, and other benefits. The term of the proposed agreement would extend from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2028.

The AUPE represents a diverse array of provincial workers across several sectors, including law enforcement, social services, natural resources, and administrative support. This broad representation underscores the impact that the voting outcome could have on various public services in Alberta.

As voting mechanisms remain digital, it remains uncertain whether the results will be disclosed on the same day voting concludes. The AUPE continues to engage its members in discussions surrounding these pivotal recommendations, emphasizing the importance of collective input in shaping the future of their working conditions.

The situation remains fluid, with potential ramifications for thousands of provincial workers. The union’s leadership is closely monitoring the voting process as the deadline approaches.
